Visiting an NZ JP

Visiting a Justice of the Peace

Logo of a Justice of the Peace for New Zealand

New Zealand is served by a community of volunteer JP’s.

These Justices make their time available for free at home, in hospitals and care homes, and at public service desks.

When visiting a JP, it is important to remember:

  1. Bring your ID and the ID of anyone else signing documents with you. This ID should be current and government-issued.
  2. Make an appointment ahead of time or visit a public service desk. Not all justices are available at short notice.
  3. Bring the original documents and the copies with you if you wish to get the copy certified.
  4. Ensure that the document you are completing can be completed by an NZ JP as some can not.
  5. Do not sign documents that need to be countersigned or witnessed by a JP before your visit.
